This photo was from the terrifying Angel's Landing hike I went on a couple weeks ago when I was at the Zion National Park in Utah. I made it as far as this spot and then stopped. I don't regret that decision one bit since I'm mildly afraid of heights.
Holy crap. From your description of the hellish hike, I wasn't sure exactly how steep it really was and how steep it seemed based on a fear of heights. That is crazy looking and I don't have a fear of heights. That makes the Half Dome cables look like a walk in the park.
There are metal chains along the way, but I'm not sure they're ovely helpful. This looks like about as far we got when I was there. I felt bad making others in the group wait for me, otherwise I would have probably made it to the end.
Wow. I hiked out to Angel's Landing once about 10 years ago. I remember being scared, but I'd forgotten how crazy the trail looks.
One thing that really got to me was all the chipmunks up there scavenging for dropped food. Those little critters would run like little madmen any time they saw a tidbit hit the dirt. Then they'd grab it and move out of view, and by that I mean it looked to me like they were leaping off the cliff with the kind of total confidence James Bond employs during the opening credits. I'm sure they were just headed for some slightly lower ledge that I'd have seen if I were tiny and not afraid of looking over the edge.
