It's always a good day when articles about Disneyland and the Pirates of the Caribbean bubble up in my news reading. I'm not quite sure, however, what to think about the news that the attraction is reopening on Monday with new tweaks that incorporate aspects and characters from the film. I'm a Disneyland purist and can off for ages on the fact that the Tiki Room removed the Offenbach number from the floor show. And, changes like this only make more changes possible (thankfully, as the article points out, there is no Eddie Murphy to be seen in the Haunted Mansion).
Even though the news is received with mixed feelings, I do have to say that I love this line from the article:
But Rodgers said that she is very confident that no one will walk away disappointed. And, she added, in response to the observation that more things in this world should be designed to look like Johnny Depp, "You're not going to find anyone who's going to disagree with you."
It's fair to say that I thought I was going to hate the first movie -- we actually saw it with absolutely no expectations of anything other than a bad Disney movie. To be so pleasantly surprised about the quality of the film gives me hope about the future of the attraction. And, how can you argue with the statement that more things should be designed to look like Johnny Depp
As anyone who visits my office knows, I'm a big fan of Disneyland. This is because it is one of my best childhood associations. Disneyland is one of the rare places that I can literally remember how it feels to be a kid, complete with smell and sound associations.
My favorite ride has probably always been the Enchanted Tiki Room. There is so much of an emotional attachment to that attraction that even to this day, my eyes well up with tears as the birds sing their songs.
One of my big fears is that the Tiki Room will change before I have a chance to take my children to Disneyland. They've already shortened the show over the years and removed the beautiful Offenbach number. It's only a matter of time before they add a rap.
