As far as my genealogy goes, I can really only trace back my paternal side to any degrees of significance. I'm actually quite into genealogy and spent a great deal of time researching it during the past couple of years. Two sites that I've had a lot of fun with are ancestry.com , which has fairly easy-to-search and view U.S Census records, and ellisisland.org , which contains scans of original ship manifests.
On my paternal father's side, I've got Walter and Julia Akuszewski who are my great-great grandparents. Both came to the United States from Poland in 1891. My grandfather's paternal grandparents, Joseph and Catherine Grabowski came to the U.S in 1884.
On my paternal mother's side, I've got Francisco and Ana Embrogno, who were my great-grandparents. According to ellisisland.org, they came over separately in the early 1900s. Since I actually lived with my great-grandfather, most of my knowledge of him comes from knowing him and not looking at records.
And that's it. It pretty impossible to figure out what went on over in Europe and I only wished that Census, marriage and death records from other countries were more readily available over the Internet.
For kicks, I like to research Ben's ancestry since he can trace it to the 1840s in California alone. Ben's family has lived in Petaluma for ages and that makes research much easier.
If you're interested in killing a couple hours, definitely check out ancestry.com
. You're pretty likely to find one of your family members, assuming that they were around for at least the 1930 census.
