I received an email today from the Milo Foundation about how they will soon be closing their Berkeley adoption store.
After much reflection, The MILO Foundation has made a decision to close our store here on Solano Avenue, and to sell this building. It has become clear - with all of the complications of the zoning and permit process in Berkeley and with the opposition from some neighbors - that continuing here is taking too many resources and drawing our efforts away from MILO's important animal rescue mission. The decision is ours – no one else's. This is a move not an ending.
From the entire letter posted on the site, it's clear that it was a complicated situation having the store in retail zone near neighbors and that it wasn't purely complaining residents that contributed to the decision -- the Milo Foundation itself takes some of the responsibility. Still, it would have been nice to see more community support for a group doing such good things for animals.
The Milo Foundation is where we got our precious little Maddy. If it wasn't for their work and dedication to these little guys, she wouldn't be sitting on my chair right now with me. We're incredibly grateful for the work they've done and for having a local place to go and adopt animals.
But Milo continues on and they certainly aren't closing. So, be sure to check out their site and see how you can help.
What is your current computer desktop image? Let's see it
My sweetheart, Maddy, greets me when I'm working on my computer. Unfortunately, whenever she sees her picture on the screen she growls. In fact, I had to discontinue using my photos screensaver because she'd start barking as soon as her picture showed up on it.
I never really saw my family's two dogs, Augie and Annie, interact with other dogs. So, seeing Maddy playing with Winnie's dog, Shelby, was really exciting. They're both the same size and energy level, so no one dog was capable of too much bullying.
Here's a video of them playing .
The only thing that sucked was when Maddy took the bone I gave to Shelby. I had to wrestle it out of her mouth to give it back to poor Shelby.
I have a lot of favorite pet memories from my family pets we've had. However, in honor of Maddy's recent introduction into our lives, I have to give her this question.
So far, the best memory has to be when we first saw her at the Milo Foundation. We had told them that we were coming to see her (since we had already applied online) and they were holding her in the back of the store. While Ben and I waited, we walked around and checked out the other dogs needing adoption. Some dogs in the Milo store: an adorable lab named Valentine that we were considering in case Maddy didn't work out; George, a crazy Husky / Alaskan Malamute that was incredibly large and howling; Rosa, a shy Shih Tzu / Spaniel mix whose picture does not do her justice;
While visiting with the other dogs, we saw one of the Milo people carrying out Maddy from the back. Immediately, Ben and I both started smiling and knew that she was perfect for us. We took her for a walk and bonded immediately. At that moment, we became a happy little family.
Today, Ben and I brought home a rescue Yorkshire Terrier/Australian Terrier mix from the Milo Foundation in Berkeley. Maddy (previously Mattie) belonged to someone who became ill and could no longer take care of her.
She's two years old and so far so sweet and wonderful. It's been like we've had her for ages.
After picking her up, we took her to the Pet store and bought all of her supplies. People were commenting that she was a lucky dog since we were picking out such nice things for her.
